The Department of Ophthalmology

The Department of Ophthalmology is part of the surgical wing at the hospital and serves a large geographical area that has no other ophthalmology departments. Many of its surgical interventions are ambulatory but other patients are hospitalized in the department for treatment of infectious diseases, accident injuries and tumors that demand a more intensive diagnostic process.

In addition, the department is a national center for corneal transplants. Many patients are hospitalized for immune system rejection, which demands intensive care or hospitalization for longer periods after complex retina surgery.

The department is very active in clinical and academic research and a clinical training location for medical students.
